In a spectacle of tactical grit, raw passion, and athletic prowess, North East Zone on Friday, October 9, 2026, emerged victorious as champions of the 50th Anniversary Inter-Zone Football Competition of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), edging out a formidable North Central Zone 3–2 in a nail-biting finale at the Area 3 Sports Field, Abuja.

The highly anticipated fixture, which served as a major sporting highlight of the golden jubilee celebrations, delivered on its promise, keeping a capacity crowd on the edge of their seats from the opening exchange to the final blow of the referee’s whistle.

From the kickoff, North East Zone asserted their intention, utilizing fluid passing channels and clinical width to destabilize the North Central defense. Their early dominance paid off, taking a commanding Three-goal lead into the half-time break following sharp offensive finishing.
Refusing to go down without a fight, North Central Zone staged a dramatic second-half comeback. Displaying tactical resilience and relentless pressure, they scored two swift goals in quick succession, restoring parity and sending their traveling supporters into a frenzy.
However, North East Zone held their defense to seal the 3–2 triumph and secure the prestigious anniversary trophy.

The post-match presentation ceremony was marked by celebratory fervor as official trophies, medals, and individual awards/Certificates were presented to the outstanding performers of the tournament.

Presenting the champion’s trophy, His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Akinwale, Methodist Archbishop of Abuja and Co-Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Celebration, commended both teams and other teams who participated in the competition, for displaying high ethical standards and competitive spirit throughout the tournament. “Sport possesses an exceptional power to foster unity and build lasting bonds across regional lines. Beyond the thrill of victory and the skills presented today, this final stands as a testament to the fellowship, strength, and oneness that define our 50-year legacy. Both finalists have brought immense credit to the anniversary celebrations.”

Also speaking at the event, Rev. Dr. Uzoaku Williams, Assistant General Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Secretary of the 50th Anniversary Central Planning Committee, highlighted the role of youth participation in sustaining the values of the jubilee.
”The energy, discipline, and dedication demonstrated by these young footballers reflect the very heart of our planning effort. This tournament has proven to be a vital bridge for community building and youthful engagement.”

In his closing remarks, Dean Rev. Nicodemus Emmanuel Ozumba, Chairman of the Events Sub-Committee, expressed appreciation to all technical staff, match officials, and fans who ensured a seamless execution of the tournament.

”From the group fixtures up to this magnificent grand finale, the commitment of our sub-committee, match officials, and enthusiastic fans has been exemplary. We are grateful to God for a successful tournament.”

A moment of Silence and prayers was observed in honour of players who lost their lives while travelling to participate in the tournament.

As the curtains fell on the sporting event, the North East Zone team embarked on a victory lap across the Area 3 pitch to the delight of their fans, bringing a memorable close to one of the flagship events of the Golden Jubilee celebration.
