In a landmark event marking a pivotal moment in the history of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), sub-committees were formally inaugurated today at the National Christian Centre, Abuja to coordinate the celebrations for the association’s 50th anniversary.
The ceremony, presided over by the CAN President, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel C. Okoh alongside one of the Central Committee’s Co-Chairman, Archbishop Michael Akinwale, brought together an array of appointed professionals, religious leaders, strategic events mangers and members from the various blocs, all united in purpose and faith.
The celebration, which will culminate in a festive gathering slated for next year, will be the second major commemoration of CAN since its formation in 1976; the first was her 45th Anniversary celebration that was held in 2021. The newly appointed sub-committees are charged with orchestrating a variety of activities aimed at honoring the rich legacy of the association while fostering unity among Christians across Nigeria.
The ceremony was marked by an inspiring exhortation from the Central Committee’s Co-chairman, Archbishop Dr. Michael Akinwale, who delivered a message titled “Chosen for a Purpose.” Drawing from the biblical text of 1 Peter 2:9-12, Archbishop Akinwale emphasized the significance of the Christian identity as chosen people, called to reflect God’s light in the world. He urged the committees to remember their divine purpose and the importance of unity in fulfilling it.
“We are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, called to show the goodness of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
Charging all appointed Sub-Committee members to run with the consciousness that they are called to demonstrate God’s love, and are expected to replicate His Character in everything they do, even in this assignment of planning and execution. He encouraged the gathered leaders to work collectively towards the good of the association and society, reminding them that their actions in the anniversary celebration could serve as a powerful testimony to the transformative power of faith.
In his charge to the Sub-committees, The CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh reiterated the Co-chairman’s message, adding that the sub-committee’s work would lay a foundation for future generations of Christians in Nigeria. Stating that this anniversary is not merely a look back at our history; but also a clarion call to further our mission in Christ, to take up the mantle of service, and to be a voice of impact.
The gathering unveiled an opportunity for Sub-Committee members to network through a brief break-out session, to map-out implementation strategies for the task ahead. In attendance were Apostle Prof. Samson Fatokun(CAN General Secretary), Rev. Dr. Uzoaku Williams (Assistant General Secretary and Central Committee Secretary), Chairpersons of WOWICAN and YOWICAN, among others.
With a clear vision for the future and a rich heritage to celebrate, the Christian Association of Nigeria is poised to make its 50th anniversary a defining moment in its ongoing journey. The collaboration and enthusiasm displayed during the inauguration signal a renewed commitment to advancing the Christian faith and working together for societal good in Nigeria. As the celebration approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a momentous occasion for the Christian community nationwide.
